Save Our National Archives Response to NARA Letter
October 10, 2026 Update
from Save Our National Archives
SONA -- Save Our National Archives -- and supporting coalitions thank Representatives Kevin Mullin and Judy Chu for their continued leadership and diligence in halting the closures of the National Archives at San Francisco (located in San Bruno, CA) and the National Archives at Chicago. Representative Mullin has issued a statement about the National Archives' response to the Congressional letter of concern.
We agree that the National Archives' response to their letter of concern was wholly inadequate and ignores the basic tenet of the National Archives to be a repository of documents and artifacts accessible to the public. That a response would come from the National Archives' Chief Operating Officer Jay Trainer and not Archivist of the United States Bradford Wilson demonstrates a cavalier disregard for the National Archives' role in a democracy and acknowledging that records belong to the people. We will continue to vigilantly fight to keep these National Archives sites and their contents intact.
The National Archives recently announced the closure of the first Record Groups to be moved from the the National Archives at San Francisco and the National Archives at Chicago. Records will begin to be closed on October 13, 2026. To stay up-to-date on the National Archives’ plans, visit their “Researcher Updates” page.
